Robert SLAPP was born in 1809 at Lacklistone, Norfolk, England and died 1890 Rylstone, NSW. He married Mary Ann SELF in 1835 Felmington, Norfolk, England. They had eight children.

Robert SLAPP (b.1809) and Mary Ann SELF (b.1812) married 5th May 1835 at All Saints, Skeyton, Norfolk. (Skeyton lies about 2.5 miles south of Felmingham, Norfolk). Robert with his wife and 3 female children, Elizabeth, Ruth and Mary Anne, sailed as "Bounty" immigrants from Plymouth, Devon on the 18th May 1841, on the vessel "Canton". The vessel sailed via Cork, Ireland, where it departed on the 1st June bound for Sydney, New South Wales where it arrived on the 18th September 1841.

Robert was the son of John and Judith SLAPP (nee CHRISTMAS of Skeyton) married 4/2/1795 Skeyton; Elizabeth a daughter of John and Elizabeth SELF of Tacolneston, Norfolk.

Daughter of George MASON (1828-1913), wife of John MULHOLLAND (1845-1918)

Maria Elizabeth MASON was the eldest child of George and Anne MASON (nee WHITE) born in the village of Fulbourn, Cambridge, England in 1848.
(n.b Fulbourn is fast becoming a suburb of Cambridge which lies 5 miles to the north west).

Maria, with her parents and ten siblings, left Plymouth, Devon, on the 30th September 1857 on board the "Stebonheath” arriving in Sydney on the 27th February 1858. (see Sydney Morning Herald newspaper article, http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13009091?searchTerm=stebonheath%201858).

Maria married John MULHOLLAND on 21st July 1868 at St James' Church, Rylstone. She had 11 children; just like her mother! (The MULHOLLAND family originated from the Manchester area).

The MASON family were poor agricultural labourers living in the Fulbourn area of Cambridgeshire. Around a dozen other "Fulbourn" families left the village for Australia between 1840 and 1880. It is believed that they were encouraged to emigrate by the Government although official documentation to support this has not yet been located.

George and Ann MASON (nee WHITE) came to Australia with only 4 children: Maria, Charles, William and Frederick. The remainder were born in Australia.

Dinah DAVIS (nee HARRIS) with her daughter in law, Elsie DAVIS (nee MORRISON, wife of Henry Herbert DAVIS); two daughters, probably Effie, and another daughter, possibly Evelyn or Grace. It’s taken in the garden at “Tryalion”, the peppercorn trees give it away.

The Globe Hotel can be seen at left with the Rylstone Hotel in the centre at end of Louee Street where it veers slightly right. The former building housing E.H. NASH's store can be seen at right where it was later extended.

Can anyone add any further information on the buildings or the approximate age of the photo?

The photo was originally captioned as the Class of 1918; however, a relative of Ethel DENNIS (back row, right hand side) has advised that Ethel died in December 1917 from appendicitis. It is therefore assumed that this is, in fact, the class of 1917.

I notice the name JABOUR. Old Mr. Jabour Lived at the end of our street and I recall, around 1954, I was home from boarding school, when Mr. Jabour died. He was a very big man weighed about 24 stone! The undertaker knocked on our door looking for my father, Harry Lye, Harry was a powder monkey at the Ben Bullen mine; they needed Harry to blow a hole in the ground because the earth was too hard to dig and they needed a very big hole. My father used to always say Mr. Jabour was forever, perfectly preserved in rock.

The woman behind Minnie looks to be May WEBB (nee KIRKLAND), sister to Minnie, Cliff, Fanny, Olive and Allan. Suspect that the person taking the photo is Stanley Webb, husband to May and brother of Alf. Sidney KIRKLAND's (half-brother to Mary Clara's other children) first name was spelled Sydney on his birth certificate.
