The
Church of England building was commenced about 1857 and shortly after
its completion the Reverend George Gurney, the first resident Church of
England minister, was appointed. The building was enlarged to its
present size during the time of J.H. Mullins. The original portion of
the church – the west end – was erected by John Purvis and it is a
permanent memorial to his skill.
