Lithgow Railway

Photo: Janet Lesslie collection

This photo of a triple engine train struggling to pull only 1100 tons of coal around tight 8 chain curves and 1 in 43 uphill grades clearly demonstrates the problems to rail transport inherent from the "greatest single blunder" to "bottleneck" development in the west. This photo taken from a Zig Zag viaduct arch shows that the existing main line on this climb is on the same rail formation as the original Zig Zag.
