On 2nd August, 1937, Mr. J. Waight, Newcastle Secretary of the Australian
Workers Union wrote to Mr. Drummond, the Minister of Education, on behalf of
the men on the Sandy Hollow—Maryvale Railway construction gangs, requesting
that a travelling school be sent to "the job", or failing that, conveyance of the children to nearby schools. He stated "that it is not right that children should miss
their education because their parents have to take what work is offering."
